Data entry tasks outsourced to Elance.com provider

So, I have been hanging around on Elance.com for a few months looking at the projects that are posted and the providers that are registered in anticipation of needing some minor work done. Well, I have finally found that tedious data entry task that will take me hours to do or $50 for someone else to do. So, I posted a project last night and within a few hours had accepted one of the four bidders. I'm going to post some updates here as to how it goes.

The basics:
I have about 35 paper order forms with handwritten line items on each. Total, there are about 276 line items (each item could be for the same person or different, even if on the same order form). There are only about 6 data fields that need captured for each line item. They will be input into an iWork Pages template that I use to print labels.

Oh, and I need this done within 24 hours.

So, I have to fax in the order forms to the provider I selected. I'm hoping to receive them back sometime today. I anticipate that I could do this at a rate of ~100 per hour (including typos, breaks, distractions, etc), or 3 hours total. So, at $50, that's only $16.66 an hour. Considering I'm pulling in almost 3 times that at my full-time job, it sounds reasonable. I'll keep this up-to-date with the progress.

Anyone else use Elance.com for this type of work?

Slight snafu with the fax machine

Well, I have already run into a slight problem. Nothing that is the provider's fault, nor mine. Just a random occurrence. Apparently, his fax machine is on the brink...which means I cannot fax my order forms to him. Fortunately, this is not an individual I am working with, but a small company, so they have additional fax machines and are on the hunt for phone numbers for them. I would be a bit concerned that I am sending these forms all over their company, but they contain non-identifying information. I'm hoping we'll get this resolved very quickly. I'll be back to update again.

Two days later and my data entry is complete

As expected, the provider that was chosen sent me the completed files this morning. All 276 handwritten records we typed into the template that I had provided them. There were some formatting issues, but those were due to an insufficient amount of description provided before they began working.

It will take me just a short while to clean up the records, but that certainly beats the hours I would have spent typing everything in myself.

All in all, I feel the $50 I spent to have them complete this job for Ministry Fundraisers was well worth it to get the fundraiser shirts out the door a bit sooner. I would recommend giving Elance.com a try if you find yourself in need of a wide variety of services.
